When Should You Visit Cyprus?
It is one of the questions we hear most frequently at JetSet Travel: "When is the best time to visit Cyprus?" The answer depends entirely on what you want from your trip — whether that is beach time, cultural exploration, hiking, business travel, or simply escaping the cold.
Cyprus enjoys one of the warmest climates in the Mediterranean, with over 300 days of sunshine per year and mild winters that rarely dip below 10°C on the coast. But the island's character shifts dramatically with the seasons, and each month brings its own combination of weather, events, pricing, and crowd levels.
As a Cyprus-based, IATA-accredited travel agency (Tourism Licence 7775) that has been advising travellers since 2006, we have a detailed understanding of how the island performs throughout the year. This month-by-month guide gives you everything you need to choose the perfect time for your visit.
January
Weather: Cool and occasionally rainy on the coast (12–17°C). Snow on Mount Olympus in the Troodos Mountains, where temperatures can drop below freezing.
Crowds: Very low. This is one of the quietest months on the island.
Pricing: The lowest prices of the year for flights and accommodation. Excellent value for budget-conscious travellers.
What to do: Skiing and snowboarding on Mount Olympus (the only ski resort in the Eastern Mediterranean). Exploring archaeological sites like Kourion and Paphos without crowds. Enjoying cosy taverna dinners in mountain villages.
Best for: Budget travellers, cultural explorers, ski enthusiasts, and those who want to experience Cyprus's quieter, more authentic side.
February
Weather: Similar to January (12–18°C) but with slightly more sunshine. Almond trees begin to blossom, bringing a beautiful pink-white blanket to the countryside.
Crowds: Low, with a spike during Carnival celebrations.
Pricing: Still low season pricing, though Carnival week may see slight increases in Limassol hotels.
What to do: Limassol Carnival — one of the biggest events on the Cypriot calendar. A two-week festival of parades, costume parties, music, and street food culminating in the Grand Carnival Parade through central Limassol. It is a genuinely exciting time to visit, with a festive atmosphere that draws locals and visitors alike.
Best for: Carnival lovers, cultural travellers, and anyone who enjoys festivals and community celebrations.
March
Weather: Spring arrives. Temperatures rise to 16–22°C. Wildflowers begin to carpet the hillsides and meadows, particularly in the Akamas Peninsula and around Paphos.
Crowds: Still relatively low, though the first tourists begin to appear.
Pricing: Transitional pricing — still below peak but starting to rise as demand increases.
What to do: Hiking in the Akamas Peninsula and Troodos Mountains (wildflower season is spectacular). Visiting Paphos's Tombs of the Kings and the mosaics of the Archaeological Park. Exploring wineries that are opening for the spring tasting season.
Best for: Hikers, nature lovers, and photographers. One of the most beautiful months in Cyprus.
April
Weather: Warm and pleasant (18–25°C). The sea temperature is still cool for swimming (around 19°C) but the weather on land is ideal for outdoor activities.
Crowds: Moderate. Greek Orthodox Easter (if it falls in April) brings a domestic surge, but international tourism is still building.
Pricing: Shoulder season pricing — good value for quality.
What to do: Greek Orthodox Easter — the most important religious and cultural event in Cyprus. Experience midnight church services, candlelit processions, the cracking of red-dyed eggs, and the feast of souvla (spit-roasted lamb) that follows Easter Sunday. Every village celebrates, and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming.
Best for: Cultural travellers, families, and anyone who wants to experience authentic Cypriot traditions.
May
Weather: Warm and sunny (22–29°C). The sea reaches a comfortable 22°C for swimming. Long daylight hours (sunrise before 6 AM, sunset after 8 PM).
Crowds: Moderate to busy. The summer tourist season is beginning, but it is not yet at peak intensity.
Pricing: Shoulder to high season pricing. Still good value compared to June–August, especially for hotel bookings.
What to do: Beach season begins in earnest. The Paphos Aphrodite Festival (opera performances in the medieval castle courtyard) preparations begin. Water sports, boat trips, and coastal exploration are all at their best. Wine villages in the Commandaria region offer tastings and vineyard tours.
Best for: Beach lovers, water sports enthusiasts, and couples. Arguably the best overall month to visit Cyprus — warm enough for the beach, cool enough for exploration, and not yet overcrowded.
June
Weather: Hot and dry (27–34°C). Sea temperature reaches 24–25°C. Virtually no rain. Long, sunny days.
Crowds: Busy. International tourist arrivals increase significantly. Beaches and popular sites become noticeably more crowded.
Pricing: High season pricing begins. Book flights and hotels well in advance for the best rates.
What to do: Kataklysmos (Festival of the Flood) — a uniquely Cypriot celebration held 50 days after Greek Orthodox Easter. Coastal cities, especially Larnaca, host waterfront festivals with boat races, water games, live music, poetry competitions, and traditional food stalls. It is one of the most distinctive cultural events in the Mediterranean.
Best for: Beach holidays, water sports, cultural festivals, and family travel.
July
Weather: Peak summer heat (30–38°C, occasionally higher). The sea is warm (26–27°C) and ideal for swimming and water sports. Dry and cloudless.
Crowds: Peak season. Beaches, restaurants, and tourist sites are at their busiest. Expect queues at popular attractions and full hotels.
Pricing: Peak pricing across the board. Book 2–3 months in advance for the best availability.
What to do: Beach life dominates. Ayia Napa and Protaras offer the most vibrant beach scene; Fig Tree Bay is consistently rated among Europe's best beaches. Sunset boat cruises, scuba diving, and jet skiing are all popular. Evening entertainment thrives in resort areas.
Best for: Beach holidaymakers, families during school holidays, and those who love warm weather and nightlife.
August
Weather: The hottest month (31–40°C). Sea temperature peaks at 27–28°C. Dry and intensely sunny — sunscreen, hats, and hydration are essential.
Crowds: Peak crowds. August is the busiest month for both international tourists and Cypriot families taking summer holidays.
Pricing: Highest prices of the year, particularly for beachfront accommodation and popular resort areas.
What to do: Beach and pool days. Assumption of the Virgin Mary (15 August) is a major public holiday with religious processions and community celebrations across the island, particularly in mountain villages. Limassol's Beer Festival draws crowds to the seafront gardens for live music and local brews.
Best for: Sun seekers, families, and festival-goers. Be prepared for the heat and plan outdoor activities for mornings and evenings.
September
Weather: Still warm (27–33°C) but the extreme heat begins to ease. The sea remains warm (26–27°C) — some of the best swimming conditions of the year. Occasional light rain towards the end of the month.
Crowds: Declining from peak levels. Schools reopen, so family tourism drops significantly. Beaches and restaurants are pleasantly busy rather than overcrowded.
Pricing: Shoulder season pricing returns. Excellent value for quality — warm weather, fewer crowds, lower prices.
What to do: The Limassol Wine Festival — one of the oldest wine festivals in Europe, held in Limassol's Municipal Gardens. Ten days of wine tastings, traditional food, live music, and dancing. An unmissable event for wine lovers and anyone who wants to experience Cypriot culture at its most convivial.
Best for: Wine lovers, couples, and value-conscious travellers. September is widely considered one of the best months to visit Cyprus — warm seas, golden light, and a relaxed atmosphere.
October
Weather: Warm and pleasant (23–28°C). The first autumn rains may arrive, refreshing the landscape. Sea temperature is still comfortable for swimming (24–25°C).
Crowds: Low to moderate. Tourist numbers drop significantly, creating a more peaceful experience.
Pricing: Shoulder to low season pricing. Excellent deals on flights and accommodation.
What to do: Hiking season returns — the Troodos Mountains and Akamas Peninsula are gorgeous in autumn, with cooler temperatures and the return of green vegetation. Cultural exploration is at its best with comfortable temperatures and empty archaeological sites.
Best for: Hikers, cultural explorers, and travellers who want Mediterranean warmth without summer crowds. Outstanding value.
November
Weather: Mild (17–23°C) with increasing rainfall. The landscape turns green after the first rains. Sea temperature drops to around 22°C — still swimmable for hardy swimmers.
Crowds: Low. Tourism is at near-minimum levels.
Pricing: Low season pricing. Some of the best hotel deals of the year.
What to do: Olive and carob harvesting in the villages. Mushroom foraging in the Troodos forests. The Paphos Marathon draws runners from across Europe. Cosy evening dining in traditional tavernas without needing reservations.
Best for: Budget travellers, hikers, food enthusiasts, and anyone who wants to experience everyday Cypriot life without the tourist veneer.
December
Weather: Cool (12–18°C) with regular rainfall, particularly mid-month. The Troodos Mountains receive snow, and Mount Olympus ski resort typically opens.
Crowds: Low, with a bump around Christmas and New Year.
Pricing: Low season, with modest increases during the holiday week (23 December – 2 January).
What to do: Christmas markets and festive events in Limassol, Nicosia, and Paphos. Mountain villages are atmospheric with wood-fire smoke, seasonal treats (melomakarona, kourabiedes), and a genuine festive spirit. Skiing opens on Mount Olympus for the winter season.
Best for: Budget travellers, Christmas atmosphere seekers, and skiers. A surprisingly charming time to visit Cyprus.
